NYX Trio is a Latvian chamber music ensemble founded in 2011 by flutist Anete Toča, violinist Tatjana Ostrovska, and pianist Ieva Sarja. The ensemble’s name is inspired by Nyx, the ancient Greek goddess of the night, a symbol of mystery, inspiration, and creativity. In mythology, Nyx protected those who worked in the shadows—artists, writers, and musicians—offering them the divine spark of imagination. This symbolic connection reflects the trio’s artistic mission: to explore the hidden, rediscover the forgotten, and bring to life music that inspires and resonates.
Since its inception, NYX Trio has developed a rich and diverse repertoire, performing both classical and contemporary works for flute, violin, and piano. Their programs feature music by Western European masters, alongside rare and often overlooked compositions, with a particular focus on Latvian composers. The ensemble is committed to championing Latvian chamber music and regularly commissions new works while also seeking out historic gems that have fallen into obscurity.
The trio has performed widely across Latvia, appearing in many of the country’s most respected venues including the Great Guild in Riga, Riga Cathedral, Dzintari Concert Hall, and Ziedonis Hall at the National Library of Latvia. Their performances have also reached audiences in regional centers such as Liepāja, Limbaži, Valmiera, Gulbene, Sigulda, and Ventspils. NYX Trio has participated in numerous festivals and concert cycles, including the Riga Festival, the White Night Contemporary Culture Forum, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Music Days, the “Hamlets. Klasika.” series, and the Winter Music Festival.
Internationally, NYX Trio has appeared in the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands, with concerts in Westminster Cathedral Hall in London, Convent Hall in Gibraltar, the Jersey Arts Centre, and St James Concert Hall in Guernsey. Their work has been featured in live broadcasts on Latvian Radio 3 "Klasika", and they have recorded for the Latvian Radio archives.
Collaboration is a central aspect of the ensemble’s work. NYX Trio has performed with prominent Latvian artists, including clarinettists Mārtiņš Circenis and Ints Dālderis, mezzo-soprano Ieva Parša, soprano Anta Jankovska, and composer-guitarist Matīss Čudars. Their interdisciplinary projects span collaborations with Ebru artist Anda Kolosova, poet Madara Gruntmane, actress Karīna Tatarinova, and ornithologist and video artist Edgars Dzenis. The trio has also refined their artistic approach through masterclasses with Professor Jacqueline Ross of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
From its very beginning, NYX Trio has played an active role in shaping contemporary Latvian chamber music. Their first commissioned piece, Variations NYX by Andris Vecumnieks, premiered in 2012 as part of the White Night Festival. This initiated a long-standing tradition of collaboration with Latvian composers. Subsequent works composed specifically for the trio include pieces by Aivars Kalējs, Imants Zemzaris, Jēkabs Nīmanis, and Marina Vidmonte. In 2020 and 2021, five more compositions were added to the ensemble’s repertoire: Les passions d’hiver by Rihards Dubra, Slēgtais pagalms by Aigars Raumanis, Arkādija by Jānis Lūsēns, Ziedlapiņu valsītis by Agneta Krilova, and Domas naktī by Monta Trigault. These works were premiered in concerts across Latvia, forming the core of the trio’s 10th anniversary concert series.
In 2024, NYX Trio released their debut album, “10 Veltījumi” (10 Dedications), under the Belgian label Prima Classic. The album brings together ten compositions written for the ensemble over the course of a decade, representing their close collaboration with composers and their commitment to nurturing new Latvian chamber music. The recording not only captures the trio’s artistic identity but also serves as a vibrant testament to the vitality and relevance of Latvian musical creativity today.
With their imaginative programming, refined musicianship, and deep commitment to contemporary music, NYX Trio continues to shape the landscape of Latvian chamber music while connecting with audiences through performances that are both intimate and inspiring.
